For optimal performance of clean signal transmission with a freely moving animal, these commutators can be individually-designed for the weight and strength of the animal in question. For example, a mouse will require a much lower torque (and hence lightweight) commutator than a rat to ensure the free movement, whereas such a sensitive mouse commutator would not have the durability for the forces exerted by a freely moving rat.
